Tell us about what you're doing with your life
After Cornell, I joined Accenture's Chicago office in their advanced technologies practice and grew through the ranks to become a leadership partner before retiring "early" in 2003.
With young children and a passion for promoting healthy and adventurous lifestyles, we moved to New Mexico and I launched Santa Fe Mountain Adventures. Our business hosted couples, families and groups offering a variety of outdoor adventures, cultural tours, and teambuilding activities. I loved sharing the scenic beauty and history of New Mexico with visitors from around the world.
In parallel, I was able to spend more time with family and cheer on my kids (Ben, Nick, and Giana) in their academic and sports endeavors.
I also volunteer with some local non-profits and provide leadership for our Club's Pickleball Program.
When not working or volunteering, Catherine and I love traveling and experiencing outdoor adventures around the world - recently in Australia and NZ.
What was your favorite class at Cornell, or the one you found most useful?
My favorite class was Intro to Wines and wine tasting has become a lifetime passion! It was always hard or impossible to get any work done after that class. Nonetheless, I remember that the Final was pretty tough and required a good bit of studying.
Psych 101 with Professor Maas was also a memorable class in Bailey Hall. Believe it or not, I fell asleep in one of the classes when Professor Maas was telling us about his sleep studies.
What is your favorite memory of your time at Cornell?
The Engineering Co-Op Program was a game changer for my experience at Cornell. I gained tremendous perspective on what was most important about my college experience and the launch of my career. After entering the program, I remember being much happier and less anxious about my studies and grades.
Another benefit was attending Cornell in the summer with much smaller class sizes while enjoying all the state parks and fun outdoor activities in the area.
How has your time at Cornell influenced you since you graduated?
My Cornell experience was a wonderful gift that taught me how to be resourceful and opened the door to many job opportunities and lifetime friends and contacts.
What extracurricular activity or hobby from your time at Cornell was most meaningful?
I joined the lightweight rowing team as a freshman. We traveled to some cool locations to compete. It was a fun but demanding experience that helped me learn how to better manage my time and priorities when I got to Cornell.
What advice would you give to a student starting at Cornell?
Don't just follow the typical 4 year undergraduate plan in Ithaca. Take advantage of some of the unique Cornell programs to broaden your college experience. Options such as co-op programs (alternating school and work semesters) or spending a semester abroad are fantastic options.
